🦋 IC Information

Character Name: Erwin Smith
Age: Late 30s early 40s
Canon: Attack on Titan
Canon Point: Immediately pre-death, Chapter 84, Midnight Sun
Character History: wiki
Canon Abilities: He's a baseline human but he is a seasoned veteran and a tactical genius. He can lead squads and do what needs to be done in almost any situation including quick changes to plan due to extenuating circumstances, but he doesn't sit around giving orders either. He's fully battle-trained and well-versed in using the standard equipment of the survey corps, remaining extremely agile and good with his blades. This is somewhat hampered by the loss of his right arm, but he's still a formidable foe in a battle.
Inventory: Just his uniform and his omnidirectional gear/blades. The gas tanks on the gear, which lets him hook to surfaces and use the lines/leverage to swing through the air as a means of travel, are extremely limited.

🦋 Personality

  1. If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?
  2. To free humanity from being trapped within city walls so that they can live better lives out in the world as a whole. Originally I had considered "all of the knowledge he seeks is his," but Erwin is pragmatic, hungry to learn, and believes in the strength and worth of humanity with an idealistic slant. It's way more likely he'd use a wish to secure the future and safety of humanity because without the constant overbearing threat of being killed by titans, there's nothing stopping him from actually going after and finding the information he wants to know. The process of learning is really important to him too so facilitating the learning in the most efficient way (i.e. just having the information in his head all at once) would appeal to him way less than opening the path to achieving the knowledge on his own while also having a secondary purpose that would help the entire world (based on the current knowledge he has). I also feel like even with the promise of no consequences, he would be extremely specific with his wording and choice of method. He would take into account things like "there are no titans" being an issue because how could humanity study titans without any around? At the same time, saying "living alongside titans in peace" causes other issues, because while it ensures safety, there now comes ethical issues with wanting to do scientific studies on a peaceful species. Erwin might not be the MOST ethical guy around, but I think he might draw a line there. Eventually he'd probably come to the conclusion of rendering titans harmless in some way either by reducing size, reducing their efficacy as hunters, or just somehow hamstringing them into being available to learn from but unable to kill or eat humans.

  3. If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.
  4. The answer is inarguably Levi Ackerman, his second in command. Following him anywhere is unquestionably yes. The only difference in his decision-making is whether they stay there or not. This is pretty well separated by what part of his life this happens in. Prior to the events leading to his death, he'd chase Levi down to bring him home but upon learning if x or y place was way better than the world they came from, he'd ultimately choose to stay. It'd be a hard decision but not because he'd think he'd lose Levi; he knows that he'd follow Erwin anywhere too. It'd be the heavy ask of asking Levi to go back to the crap life they came from just so Erwin could answer the questions he's desperate to get answered or to serve some thankless higher purpose. Levi being in a better place would win and he'd stay. If where they ended up was worse than home, he'd drag them both through hell itself to get them back. However, at this point of his life where he has nothing but being dead to return to if he goes home, obviously there's no hesitation. They stay. If the place is better than their old life, great. If it's worse, they'll work to make it better like they always do.

As for the why, Levi's the most important person in his life. The best that humanity has to offer both subjectively and objectively, and someone who put his faith in Erwin when he really, really didn't have to. Erwin saw potential in him when anyone else would have written him off and he was right to do so. There's no one he trusts more, no one else he'd turn to for any sort of moral compass ruling (which is its own complicated can of worms).

  5. What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?
  6. Erwin's charisma is one of the most notable aspects of his characterization as a whole. It has to be: this is a man who convinces people to go to almost certain death on a pipe dream, who inspired lifelong devotion with a single speech. All other aspects of who he is fall into place behind this core piece. His charisma works because he has the intelligence and skills to back it up. People follow him not just because he's giving a moving speech, they follow him because he's giving a moving speech while capable of backing up what he says. There's also an element of honesty to parts of it: at no point does he tell his squads that they have higher survival rates than they do. He tells them exactly what the score is, makes sure they know the danger they're stepping into by following him, and still has his backing because he inspires the grit and determination in people to bring glory back to humanity.

Not everything is honest: he also uses his charisma to ensure that when he has to do something shady or some form of subterfuge, he keeps people in the dark. For the most part he's able to ensure that people don't catch on to falsehoods until it's too late and whatever his plan is has already been seen far enough along that there's no turning it off its path. The dual uses he finds for the skill are a good example of a lot of the duality he embodies.

  7. Your character gets to return home, but when they do they learn that they've been gone for hundreds of years. How do they react?
  8. Erwin has lost so many people in his life, so many soldiers, everyone he's ever cared about, that his only options at that point would be to either lay down and die for nothing (unacceptable) or to press on and make sure all those deaths actually meant something. He'd be desperate to know what'd changed in the world, if any progress had been made in the work he'd felt so passionately about from the beginning. He wouldn't be the same person though, at least to an extent: with no ties left to anyone he'd cared about, he'd be all the more pragmatic, a lot of that idealism falling away even if he would keep working for a better future. That's if the world hasn't changed for the better, of course: he'd try to go back to what he was doing, to reform the future while learning as much as he could from the mistakes made in the time he was gone.

If the world had changed for the better and people like him were no longer needed, he wouldn't know what to do with himself. He would still be glad for humanity having a better, safer world, but he's well aware he doesn't belong in that kind of world. Without an overarching goal he'd focus entirely on learning instead of anything else. He'd feel like an unnecessary antique, a mantle decoration with no purpose, but at least the process of knowledge-seeking would keep him occupied and keep him from spiraling about it.

🦋 Fae Court

List your top three choices for your characters adoptive court. The mods will choose the one out of those three options that seems the most fitting based on your app.
  • Winter

  • Day

  • Dark

Ability: Do you want your character to gain the ability of their court?

He would accept the powers of Day or Dark on an IOU basis because he doesn't have any canon supernatural powers, but the Winter power wouldn't interest him so he'd skip it if that's ok!
