Character Base

• Character Name: Erwin Smith.
• Age: Mid to late thirties.
• Canon (Date/Year Released)/Canon Point: Attack on Titan: Chapter "Midnight Sun" release date of August 9, 2016. Immediately post-death.
• Items Coming Along: His gear, including weapons.
Content Warnings for Character: There are none really for him as a person, other than missing an arm, but the canon itself is extremely violent and that is going to flavor his interactions and his personality, so: blood, gore, death, body horror.

Character Background

• History: Sorry for the super long wiki.
• Core Relationships:

His father: An easy one. He looked up to his father as a child, took on his beliefs, and inadvertently got him killed by sharing those beliefs. He feels guilt over that into adulthood, and his main goals continue to the end to be to prove his father right.

Hange Zoë: Erwin prized their intellect and leadership qualities; he leaves the corps in their hands, indicating a level of intense trust.

Levi Ackerman: Easily one of the more formative relationships for either character in the series, Erwin and Levi are in a symbiotic partnership in a way. There's a mutual, unbreakable respect, a drive to work together, and an unshakable bond. Erwin saw the potential in Levi early on and faced the possibility of an assassination attempt just to prove it. From a point where Levi vows to kill Erwin, once respect blooms it never stops. An inseparable pair even when apart, they rely on one another both in battle and out of it. While one might assume their personalities would clash, they fit together easily and work in perfect tandem. Levi is the only one that Erwin opens up to about his feelings at the end of his life, and that coming from a man who kept his goals and priorities close to the chest until then speaks volumes. There's an implicit AND explicit trust between them that never cracks.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:

Intelligent: Erwin is extremely intelligent and his course in the series documents it well. While he's alive, most plans that alter plot points are his, and he orchestrates things like he's playing a game of chess even before he's Commander. He games the system to gain funding for the survey corps, and uses near-constant machinations to further plans and events. He correctly predicts many plot points that escape other characters: he's among the first to realize that one of the titans is actually human, he orchestrates a coup and the crowning of a new queen from a jail cell and on the way to his own execution. His battle prowess is impressive as well; he created a formation for the squads to use to travel outside the walls that allowed communication between the troops and for things to turn on a dime whenever something got in their way. His actions through the series allowed others to learn more about the outside world and technology even though he didn't live to see the results.

Intensity: While this may not be a traditionally "positive" trait, Erwin uses his intensity to great success. He can turn it on and off at will, being soft when necessary before turning into a showcase of extraordinarily sharp wit and fervor. His speeches are legendary and rousing and he can cause the hearts of the soldiers under his command to burn with as much intensity as his own, which is impressive. He even brings Levi, who upon meeting had sworn himself to killing Erwin, to join his cause, and in other instances he pulls soldiers into a suicide charge despite all doubts.

(2+) Negative Experiences:

Ruthless: Erwin doesn't shy away from sending soldiers to their deaths to further his goals. They all know what they're getting into, but the fact remains that he encourages soldiers into battle when they all know that a majority of them are going to die in the process. He's calculating; he runs maneuvers at a disadvantage and takes risks that endanger people but get the job done. Even in the face of crushing defeat, he presses on in battle. Most notable is the suicide rush at the very end of his life. They all know they're dying, even him, but he inspires them into it anyway.

Doubt/guilt: While he's good at hiding it, to an extent Erwin doubts and second-guesses himself. Guilt from the countless soldiers he sent to death piles up on him, compounded by the fact that everyone thinks he's doing it for the glory of humanity when in reality, his desperation to learn the truth and confirm his late father's theories is really what fuels him. In the end, he admits that he feels the weight of every death, consumed by the consequences of his own actions.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers: No supernatural or superhuman powers, but he is a brilliant tactician and leader and fighter.
• Blood Type: Vileblood.
• Omen: A small pig. Pigs are smart, which is Erwin-adjacent, and also they miss out on something beautiful their entire lives, unable to see the sky when Erwin never got to see the ocean his entire life and died before reaching that goal.
• Blessed Day: 10/14.
• Patron Pthumerian: Cloverfield.
• Blood Power Manifestation: Heightened pain tolerance with intermittent episodes of entire feeling loss. No poison touch, but definitely poison blood and full poison resistance.
