CHARACTER (CANON)
CHARACTER NAME: Erwin Smith
CANON: Attack on Titan
CANON SPECIES: Human
CANON AGE: Mid-late 30s
APPEARANCE: Here.
CANON BACKGROUND: Here.
PERSONALITY:
• stoic/calm
- He doesn't really "break down" in any sense until right before he dies. He gets his arm eaten and he essentially tells his troops to go on without him because he's replaceable. He gets tortured while he's a prisoner to the point that he's almost executed but he still stays stoic, he keeps his head in the game even when he's in crippling pain.
- When he does crack it's only in front of his closest friend and confidant Levi Ackerman, and he isn't loud or tantruming, more like letting the mask crack just a little so that Levi can see the vulnerable bits beneath.
• intelligent
- He's behind all main plans even when he's not yet commander. He games the system to prevent the survey corps from losing expedition funding. He keeps on with machinations like this throughout his career.
- He correctly predicts many things that happen, for example he correctly figures out that one of the titans is actually human (which allowed her to escape) and would fight them again, which is further evidenced by his ordering equipment refueling and so on when they normally wouldn't have needed it yet.
- He orchestrates an uprising, an entire uprising including crowning Historia as queen... from jail. He's in jail for most of that arc and he still plans everything thoroughly.
- His actions allowed others to learn more about the outside world and technology even though he didn't live to see the results.
- He created a formation for the squads to use to travel outside the walls that allowed communication between the troops and for things to essentially turn on a dime whenever something got in their way. It was extremely successful and kept more people from dying.
• selfishness
- Unbeknownst to his subordinates, his speeches about working for the good of humanity are, while noble in action, not indicative of his actual attitude, which is doing whatever it takes to get the knowledge that HE seeks, which is knowledge. That knowledge would help humanity, yes, but his actions are not actually altruistic.
• self-doubt
- As his time in the manga continues, it becomes clear that he starts to doubt the veracity of his own ambitions and the ways he goes about getting to those goals. It becomes a sticking point that the realizes just how much pain and suffering he's caused.
POWERS & ABILITIES: He's technically a baseline human but he is a seasoned veteran and a tactical genius. He can lead squads and do what needs to be done in almost any situation including quick changes to plan due to extenuating circumstances, but he doesn't sit around giving orders either. He's fully battle trained and well-versed in using the standard equipment of the survey corps, remaining extremely agile and good with his blades. This is somewhat hampered by the loss of his right arm, but he's still a formidable foe in a battle.
CHARACTER (AU)
CHARACTER NAME: N/A
SPECIES: Human
AGE: 35
APPEARANCE: N/A
MODS: A prosthetic arm to replace the missing one. General sci-fi looking, metal and blue glowy stuff that has neural connections so he can use it like a normal hand even if the sensation of touch isn't there. He would not have had it regrown and it's also not a "mod" in the normal sense: it's very much a medical prosthesis.
BACKGROUND: As a young boy, Erwin's father was a teacher that had some radical ideas about past events being 'scrubbed' or 'sanitized' in some way for the current generations. He also posited ideas of humanity (and hybrids, and people being modded...) being altered at a molecular level to be easier to control as a means of keeping peace, which was controversial enough that Erwin's father was removed from his position as a teacher even though he'd never made those statements to his students—just to Erwin, who at the time was too young to understand why he shouldn't share those kinds of theories with anyone.
As he grew older he became more and more intent on these beliefs, though he did learn to keep the concepts a little closer to the chest unless they actively became relevant to the conversation at hand. Once he graduated, he signed up for general law enforcement and then security details on starships, eventually working his way up to specops. He spent a lot of time and effort putting together means of improving accuracy, safety, and workloads for security workers, and every so often one of his ideas gets implemented and people remember why they listen to him sometimes.
While he was part of Tellus law enforcement on-ground, he had a stint as an instructor for new cadets, teaching them the ropes and how best to go about keeping the peace and keeping people safe. It was on a training mission like this that he met Levi Ackerman, who ended up helping to collar a criminal they were chasing. His impressive usage of equipment that should normally have taken quite some training to master, including a great stunning shot on the suspect, led Erwin to approach him with a formal request that he join up to hone his skills and work helping people as one of Erwin's coworkers.
An awful accident on what should have been a routine mission that lost him his arm made him reevaluate his priorities, what he wanted out of life, and how he wanted to get it. He decided that new experiences and the pursuit of knowledge were super important to him, so when the chance and opportunity to see new worlds and galaxies in becoming part of the crew of the Mnemosyne came up, he decided that was the chance he should take. The pull was so strong that he managed to convince his work partner to explore brand new territories with him. What's a long trip in cryosleep if you get to see places no one else has ever seen afterward?
CREW DIVISION: Security, I can try to rewrite his AU for science if necessary haha
DIVISION APTITUDE: He's a great leader and has a lot of military prowess in canon; a lot of his character is built around this kind of background.
SUBDIVISION: Specops, I'd have to think about what he'd do in science though.
